Skincare for Beach Bums

Sea salt contains a cluster of minerals, particularly magnesium, that are good for the outer layer of both human and K9 bodies. In moderation, this opens up pores to increase blood flow which provides benefits such as decreasing inflammation.  However, when a beach bum gets too much exposure to saltwater it can cause problems by excessively stripping away natural oils that maintain hydration for the skin. This can lead to irritation or even infection.  So, what do we do if the ocean is an integral part of our everyday routine and our dogs develop dry, itchy skin after beach trips?  First, rinsing our woofs off with regular water before they come into the house will help wash away and dilute the salt concentrations.  Second, we can add supplements or foods that have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids to their meals.  For example, fish oil is a great source.  Omega 3’s help regulate both human and k9 production of protective oils for our skin.  Extra Omega-3 provides the body with the necessary fuel to get back in balance and help alleviate skin issues.  If this doesn’t do the trick visit a trusted veterinarian to best meet your dog’s individual needs.
